Our sixteen hour flight to Ethiopia allowed for a lot of prep and planning time to solidify our goals for the trip. Our hope was to initially try to understand the inner workings of the main nonprofit, Ellilta Women at Risk and also how it closely partners with multiple nonprofit organizations. Once relationships were established, our main goal was to help Ellilta setup sustainable partnerships and also create new international fundraising channels. The truth is, with 3 or 4 nonprofits in the mix, I was completely confused with who was doing what. That said, meeting everyone and understanding their roles made all the difference. Each nonprofit had amazing people doing more amazing things for their organizations.

Assessing the needs of Ellilta during our trip leads us to the next phase of developing new fundraising channels. Creating solid relationships during our trip allows us to work together even though we are 10,000 miles away. This phase is already in process and the future looks promising.

A Few Favorites:

  • One of my favorite things on the trip included the "Buna" ceremony, which is coffee ceremony. They actually roast green coffee beans and then serve you coffee. It was a great time of fun and fellowship, plus the coffee was amazing!
  • Goats are everywhere...if you're hungry you just buy a goat. You can even hire the "goat guy" to slaughter and prep the goat for cooking, which only cost $4!
  • Donkeys wander just about every street in Addis Ababa!
  • The people are extremely friendly and welcoming.
  • Learning about the Christian foundation in Ethiopia - Over 65% of Ethiopians are Christians. It seemed like everyone we interacted with was very open about their faith and evident that it was the main focus in their lives. Very Cool!

Ellilta Women at Risk

The issues of prostitution in Ethiopia are not much different from the rest of the world – it has a lot to do with poverty, lack of educational and job opportunities for girls, breakdown of families, teenage pregnancy, sexual, emotional and physical abuse on children. When a few of these factors are combined, the push on young girls to veer towards prostitution becomes significant. Once young girls and women get involved in prostitution, the face of their original problems changes with more issues engulfing their lives, loss of self worth, addictions, destructive learnt behaviors.

Ellilta Women at Risk programs are designed to address both the rehabilitation aspect of women in prostitution, prevention education to vulnerable youth as well as to create awareness about issues around prostitution among the civil society.
