My wife Debbie and I started our day before sunrise in downtown Los Angeles. It was memorable to see the city waking up as we checked in and took a training on how to perform our duties for the day. We had registered as Peace Ambassadors at March for Our Lives Los Angeles and our responsibilities included keeping participants safe from traffic, helping crowds move from one location to another, and de-escalating potentially tense situations between marchers, onlookers, and opponents of the march. In general, we helped to keep the march flowing as smoothly and safely as possible.
March for Our Lives was started by students as a reaction to the mass shootings that have become far too common in the United States. While the regularity of mass shootings in our country has increased greatly over the last decade, sadly it doesn't seem like much has been done to try and prevent them from happening in the future. The participants in this march made it clear that they would no longer wait for someone else to stop mass shootings in this country.
They demanded that our government take action now to make our schools and streets safe from gun violence. While the energy from the estimated 200,000 marchers was intense at times, the crowd remained peaceful and their message rang clearly and powerfully across the country.
The Organization
March for Our Lives
March for Our Lives is created by, inspired by, and led by students of all ethnicities, religions, and sexualities across the country. We will no longer sit and wait for someone else to take action to stop the epidemic of mass shootings. The mission and focus of March For Our Lives is to assure that no special interest group or political agenda is more critical than the timely passage of legislation to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant in our country. We demand morally-just leaders to rise up from both parties in order to ensure public safety.
