At Operation Hope I have volunteered at the front desk as well as worked with the Children during their after-school work and play time. As a secure, safe, drug and alcohol free location, the front desk position ensures that only authorized personnel and residents have access to the facility and it's amenities
Every family at the shelter is assigned chores like sweeping the hallways or cleaning up the courtyard and must work with the front-desk staff to help complete their duties. The community nature of the facility put the front-desk staff at the center of everything that happens in the building!
The after-school homework and learning sessions are run by volunteers and give children the help and support they need to be successful in school. The viscous cycle of homelessness pits seemingly mundane tasks like completing homework against the urgent need to find a place a stay for the night. With a consistent roof over their head, the children at Operation Hope are able to work with the volunteers and get their academics back on-track.
The ultimate goal is keep the kids in school and performing at their grade level. The long term goal for every Operation Hope client is to leave the facility with a housing plan intact as well as the tools for the parents to remain independent and the children to remain in school.
The Organization
Operation Hope -Vista
Operation HOPE-Vista is a unique shelter in that families are offered a private family bedroom as well as a single women’s shared bedroom. This allows families to begin reclaiming a stable family dynamic immediately which enhances the ability to recover their self-sufficiency.
The facility accommodates forty-five individuals and offers laundry, shower, computer banks, playground and courtyard, and conference room for Homework Club activities and adult education classes. All case management is performed on-site in order to raise client accountability and to better assist clients in progressing toward the next step in ending their homelessness.
